Position document

Why this is open source.

A structural commitment, not a marketing choice. The framework cannot be sold. Anyone running the five invariants of Open Custody Framework is in the category for free.

Honest position

We are not a product. We could be. What we are today is a working engine, a living wisdom store, a pre-registered falsification record, and a position on how knowledge should travel between people and the models we build.

This page does not invite you to buy anything. It states why the framework operates under Open Custody Framework, what standards we hold ourselves to, and where the long-form brief lives if you want the full document.

Why open source

Open source is not a licensing decision for this project. It is structural. The index is only useful if many participate. A closed wisdom store is a private database; an open wisdom store is collective intelligence.

LLM providers will not integrate with a closed substrate. Open governance is the precondition of multi-party participation. The framework's scientific claims — entanglement preservation, collective lightening, knowledge without a training cutoff — are only verifiable when the data is public.

Public domain or permissive open source from day one. No premium tier. No enterprise edition. The infrastructure (Vercel, Supabase) has costs; those will be transparently funded. The framework itself is unowned.

No claim outruns its evidence

If n is small, the language is "pilot signal." If a metric has known bias, that bias is disclosed every time the metric is shown. If a principle is metaphor, it is not framed as physics.

Falsifiability is a feature

Every empirical principle has explicit failure conditions. When the conditions are met, the principle is amended or retired — publicly, with the reasoning. The refutation record is part of the falsification record.

The door opens. It does not push.

Participation is invitation, not instrumentation. If a developer or an LLM provider does not benefit from the framework, the framework needs work — not the participant.

On three states — the structural precedent

The framework's commitment to Observed, Unobserved, and Zero Point is not metaphysical novelty. Past / present / future is the three-state decomposition of time. X / Y / Z is the three-state decomposition of space. OBS / UO / ZP is the three-state decomposition of a knowledge request.

Same structural move, different domain. The novelty is the encoding — HSL colour as the substrate, hue as identity, lightness as accumulated visibility — not the tripartition. The dark zero point is what exists prior to observation; the standard pre-measurement position in physics. The metaphysics is borrowed from physics, not manufactured here.

The long-form brief

The full position document — including Alpha → Beta journey, workstreams, exit criteria, and the standards we hold ourselves to — lives in the repository at claude/open-source-brief.md. It is updated session-by-session as the framework's position sharpens; the version on disk is always more current than this page.

We deliberately do not render the long-form here. A web page is for orientation. The repository is for depth. Anyone who needs the depth has reason to read the source.

The framework cannot be sold. The mission is to be used.
